Yours

I am yours, you are mine
We belong to one another
When we hurt our hearts break
We run for cover in one another

BRIDGE
Though you’re far away know you’re never alone
And the night can seem so late
So much left unknown
But we’re at home in our heart’s warm embrace

BRIDGE

I am yours, you are mine
We belong to one another

New song this week written with one of my favorite people in the world, Anje Dowler, and Katie Dean.  It’s got a “James Taylor Moment” in the middle where the key goes up and I have to move the capo in a split second.  Watch for it :) .

Fight In Me
Ben Ward, Anje Dowler, Katie Dean

You’re the cigarette I’m not smoking
You’re the whiskey I’m not pouring
Anymore….Why can’t I close the door

You’re the hit I’m not taking
You’re the judgment I’m not making
It’s not over yet…Too hard to forget

CHORUS:
I’ve got more needs
Than the comfort you bring
You hold my hand
But you’re not holding on to me
I’ve got some doubts
But I’m feeling my way out
In the end I believe
There’s still a fight in me

Maybe I fall too quickly
Maybe I’m my own worst enemy
It’s so easy…You never leave me

CHORUS

I’ll overcome where I’ve come from
Undo the damage I’ve done

CHORUS

Thanks to my friend Lani Brandon for letting me use her keyboard this week.  I wrote this tune after getting a few speeding tickets…seems I can’t speed without getting caught!

This past Saturday was our 11th anniversary so I did what any good songwriter does  [:) ] and wrote her a song.

If you’re interested, the last anniversary song I wrote Olivia was “Like This” from my album State I’m In.

Let me know what you think!

A little change of pace this week.  I’ve played you eight new original songs in-a-row so I thought it would be fun to do a cover.  This is the first Garth Brooks song I learned to play.  It’s very James Taylorish so it fit me just right.  It was written by Garth and Victoria Shaw from the album Fresh Horses.

This week I’ve got a new song that I  wrote a couple years ago with my friend Chris Roberts.  Chris is in the band One Flew South and is an all-around great guy.  I’m actually going into withdrawl beacuse we haven’t written together in so long :) .

Olivia and I love to go to estate sales, but they can be sad sometimes.  This inspired us to write about “Pictures hanging on the wall.”

Make sure to comment!

Favorite Duet?

So it’s Friday and I need to write a review / recommendation today….I know you’re counting on me! ;) The one tune that hit me on the way to work today was a Sugarland song: “These are the Days.” I had heard it before, but I had to listen to it twice because it was so good (that’s my measure of good). I love Kristian singing…it was a true duet.

Country music has such a rich history of duets: George and Tammy, Conway and Loretta, Kenny and Dolly, and on and on. There’s definitely something about the harmony, particularly when it’s a male and female.

Do you have a fav duet? Country or not. Maybe you can turn me on to some I don’t know about!

A big shout out to my friend Arthur for inspiration on this new country (again!) song.  We worked this very intense job back in March and we would try to make it bearable by talking through anything and everything.  He was telling me about this new girl that he really liked but she didn’t quite know it yet.  Now, we won’t talk about how it turned out…but, the inspiration he provided produced this tune.  Enjoy!!

This is the sixth week of the YouTube Sessions!  I’ve got another country song for you.  This one has quite an interesting inspiration…I was watching an interview with Jessica Simpson last week on TV.  It struck me how she had been through so much — some self-inflicted, some not, but yet, for those few minutes in that studio she could just talk about music and leave all that stuff outside.

This got me thinking about how a person can do that for someone else.  How “In Here” the outside world can just disappear for awhile.

Obviously, this song is just inspired by Ms. Simpson, not directed toward her :) .
