This is the Sixth Week after the Epiphany in the Church Calendar.

Our general order comes from the Book of Common Prayer (1979) Daily Office and Scripture readings from the Revised Common Lectionary. We’ll open with the song “I Lose My Ability” by Jonathan David Helser, Melissa Helser, Molly Skaggs, and David Leonard throughout today’s time of prayer. We’ll read Psalm 1 followed by the Gloria Patri. Our Gospel reading is Luke 6:17-26 . We’ll say the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Collect of the Day. We’ll then have a time of prompted prayer.

  1. Since I was a little girl in church I wondered why they called a certain prayer the ‘collect’. Did it have something to do with taking a collection? What did they want to collect?

Today Ben clarified that for those of us who have been confused by this term all our lives: the collect is the prayer we pray COLLECTIVELY. In other words, what we pray together in community! I’m sure I’m not the only one who was perplexed by this term. Might you use this term more frequently so as to instill the meaning for future podcast listeners? Thanks for enlightening us!
